Kitchen Make-over

Our rental house kitchen was looking a tad tired and in need of a face-lift so I set about a plan to update and modernize it without having to shell out much cash.

Here's what was done...

The first step was to improve the hideous cabinets. I removed all the doors and used 2 coats of black spray paint. For the sides I used black emulsion. Cabinet edges were given a fresh lick of white paint to help them stand out against the black fronts and the mug cubby was also painted white inside and edged in black.

All the walls were painted with a couple of coats of fresh white emulsion – an easy to clean variety as I can be a messy cook!

The grey window blind was cleaned up and sprayed black. I was tempted to buy new but at 1,000 baht I opted for the cheaper route at a 10th of the price.

Using 2 pieces of ply wood, left over from an old desk, I sprayed them black before drilling holes into the cabinet sides and attaching with screws to serve as a hob light cover. The light itself has been affixed to the back wall to hide from view but still be accessible to the plug sockets.

I bought a flat metallic towel rail and fixed it up to the wall under the window, so now we have a proper place to hang towels, not just the cupboard handle!

The final step was to give the floor tiles a very thorough scrub with a mix of water, vinegar and baking soda – resulting in gleaming grout that I’m determined to keep clean from now on... it looks so good I had to do the rest of the house too.

I’m pretty pleased with the result, it feels modern and clean but there is still some room for improvement – an island for the  side wall with more food prep and storage space would be ideal. Next Project!

Cost:-
Emulsion 450 thb
Spray paint 320 thb
Brushes 145 thb
Floor scrub solution 25 thb
Towel Rail 290 thb

I also bought a new kettle, rubbish bin and towels bringing the overall spend to just 2,260 thb ( £45).
